- Wildlife Responses to Pedestrians and Dogs: Knight-Millar
- Influence of Recreational Trails on Breeding Bird Communities: Millar Scott and Knight
The Miller/Knight study actually concluded that dogs are NOT a contributing factor to the disturbance of birds in Boulder’s Open Space. This is true for both on and off-leash dogs, in situations both on and off-trail for the forest and grassland bird species studied. Quoting the study itself:
"Because the area of influence was generally the smallest for the dog-alone treatments -a V&S situation- it appears that the presence of a pedestrian is the additive factor." Dogs did not contribute to trail effect for the bird species studied by Miller & Knight. In fact, Richard Knight himself reiterated this point in his Feb-2005 lecture in Boulder.
- Grassland Ecosystem Management Plan (GEMP):
This is a comprehensive inventory of natural assets of Boulders surrounding grasslands, but it goes on to recommend additional restrictions and closures.

Recreation and the Environment Links |
- The Montana Chapter of The Wildlife Society seeks "...to serve and represent wildlife professionals in all areas of wildlife conservation and resource management." Their study on the Effects of Recreation on Rocky Mountain Wildlife: a Review for Montana is a good summary of the research. Some of it is slanted, but the Open Space staff cites it. We don't agree with everything here, but we need to become acquainted with this book on the web.
