City of Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks (OSMP)

Boulder OSMP, Trailhead Leashing - Open Space and Mountain Parks will test whether requiring leashes at trailheads lessens conflicts between dogs and between dogs and people.
Affected trailheads include Mt. Sanitas, Chautuqua, Dry Creek, Marshall Mesa, and Dowdy Draw. Check out your trailhead, and contact FIDOS if you have questions or concerns.

Affiliated FIDOS Groups

Denver FIDOS is active in ensuring that people and dogs can enjoy their part of Colorado. Visit their web site. One of their goals is to create off-leash dog parks in Denver.

Golden FIDOS promotes a Voice and Sight Regulation for off-leash access in Golden.

Mill Creek FIDOS (in Utah, by Salt Lake City) is trying to maintain dog friendly access to Mill Creek. Mill Creek heads in the Wasatch, southeast of Salt Lake City.

The Boulder Humane Society has a variety of training classes for dogs. One progression is: Beginners, Advanced Beginners, and Outdoor/Open Space.

"I teach people to communicate in a way that their dogs can understand, using positive, motivational methods. My focus is on building solid relationships between dogs and their people, so that they may fully enjoy one another at home and on the trails. My methods have effectively trained dogs from exceptional pets up to working search and rescue dogs. I'm currently offering Puppy Kindergarden, Beginning Obedience, Trail Dog, and Tracking classes, as well as private lessons."

Recreation and the Environment Links

The Montana Chapter of The Wildlife Society seeks "...to serve and represent wildlife professionals in all areas of wildlife conservation and resource management."
Their study on Effects of Recreation on Rocky Mountain Wildlife: a Review for Montana is a good summary of the research. Some of it is slanted, but the Open Space staff cite it. We don't agree with everything here, but we need to become acquainted with this book on the web.

Global Dogs and Open Space Links

Public Open Space and Dogs "a design and management guide for open space professionals and local government." This study by Australians is relevant to Boulder, Colorado. A "book on the web", it addresses issues like: the benefits of dogs to people and society, dog's and owner's needs, and principles for access to open space by dogs.
