May's News

The Road to Bear Creek

Dean Paschal has released the minutes of the meeting and a followup meeting he had with NCAR.

Everyone at the meeting should have received it. Basically the issue isn't protection of riparian areas, or policing of the NCAR trail by OSMP rangers, but NCAR's insistence that off leash dogs are not allowed on Federal Land.

Apparently this is encoded in law but we have't actually found it yet, still looking.

Watch this space!

Remember the 4 step process:

  • Community Wide Conversation
  • Discussion with NCAR and UCAR (looking for the law)
  • Positive Majority Recommendation from OSBT to City Council
  • 2 Readings by City Council to allow exemption to BCR 6.1.16
  • Dogs and Prairie Dogs and the Plague

It was reported that the Plague was detected in the prairie dog
burrows up round Gunbarrel. A very good reason to keep your pup clear
    of the Prairie dogs.

Where the sun sets in the east

Walking the dog in the evenings I am sometimes struck by the the fact that
the sun appears to be setting in the east. For years I assumed
it was just another Boulder oddity, but the chaps at NOAA put me straight.

The rays that appear to come from the east are in fact, anticrepuscular rays.

    A Jolly Good Read!

This months good read is a book by local author Raymond Bridge,
    "The Geology of Boulder County"

Fidos Reviewer: Geology has been a hobby of mine for years and it was with some
enthusiasm that I bought "The Geology of Boulder County"

The book attempts to give a very high level introduction to Geology
in the first chapters, and in the appendix.

If you have some knowledge of Geology it is useful in identifying the local horizons and understanding how they correspond to other parts of the world, but the combination of elementary principles and advanced terminology, as well as columns of GPS waypoints makes for a tough read at times.

The value of the book is in the 25 guided tours around Boulder County.
Unfortunately, of the 25 tours, 4 are car based and available to everyone,
but a member of Fidos with the off leash dog
can only follow 5 of the 25 tours, such as Marshal Mesa, and Dowdy Draw.

The rest, including Bear Creek, NCAR, Skunk Canyon, Heil Ranch
and locations on the Continental Divide and banned to off leash dogs and will
therefore be of limited interest to FIDOS members.

This book is part of the FIDOS Reference Resources and may be borrowed from the curator.
